TRA Marketplace, Texas' largest foodservice show, generated over two tons of food over the course of two days, which was distributed to three local charities, via Second Servings® a Houston food rescue non-profit. It was the 79th year for the show, which took place on June 26 and 27 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The Texas Restaurant Association (TRA) partnered with Second Servings® of Houston, a fast-growing, non-profit organization that rescues excess prepared food from hotels, restaurants, caterers, retailers, convention centers, distributors, manufacturers, sports venues, commissaries, and other regulated food businesses. Second Servings® picks up and delivers the food the same day to approved charitable meal providers. The TRA Marketplace donation of over 4,000 lbs of fresh and prepared food was distributed between three local charities; Impact Houston, Magnificat Houses, and Loaves & Fishes. Some furniture and supplies were also donated by exhibitors. Barbara Bronstein, Founder and President of Second Servings® of Houston says, The TRA Marketplace gave us an excellent opportunity to make the foodservice industry aware of Second Servings® of Houston and also demonstrate how easy and beneficial it can be to become a food donor. We have already added two major donors through TRA and are in discussions with additional manufacturers, distributors, and hotels who expressed strong interest in partnering with us. Almost one in five people face food insecurity in Harris County. Food waste is a growing problem and we were delighted to partner with Second Servings® of Houston. It is essential that we redirect perfectly edible surplus food away from the landfill to the people who really need it, and they made it a seamless process, says Richie Jackson, CEO of TRA. TRA Marketplace is part tradeshow, part conference, with over 500 exhibiting companies participating, showcasing everything from artisan food products and craft beverages to linens, mobile technology, security, kitchen equipment, supplies and even food trucks. In May, the show was announced as one of the nation's top 25 fastest-growing shows in attendance by the Trade Show News Network (TSNN), a leading trade show industry authority. TRA Marketplace will be celebrating its 80th year in 2017, pulling out all stops at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, July 9 and 10.
