Texas Restaurant Association member and past president Carmelo Mauro received the Corporate Community Impact Award for Small Business from Texas Governor Greg Abbott.  He was honored at the Governor’s mansion on October 10 as part of the Governor’s Volunteer Awards.

In their 33rd year, the Governor’s Volunteer awards honor the extraordinary service of individuals and organizations in Texas who have made a difference in their communities through service and volunteering.

Mauro, founder of Carmelo’s Ristorante Italiano, is known throughout Texas for his generosity in support of numerous causes. In addition to his many leadership roles and activities within TRA, perhaps his most notable accomplishment was working with the TRA Education Foundation to create and establish a entrepreneurship program in Del Valle High School in Austin.  His kitchen and interior designers transformed classroom space at the high school into a real restaurant, and approximately 5,200 students have gone through the Del Valle program since 2001.
